Camaree McCully is an EMT and a student at Solano Community College studying computer science. This spring, he completed the DxD Pathways in Health Technology Program, working on a team project with Intuitive Surgical. He shares how the program impacted his career plans:
I have always wanted a meaningful career. Growing up I was not sure what exactly I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to be able to make a difference in someone’s life. After high school I became an EMT for some time with the goal of becoming a firefighter. I loved being there to help people on what potentially was the worst day of their life. However, I knew this was not the end all be all career for me.
Along with my love for medicine was a love for technology. I have seen firsthand that the intersection of the two often saves lives. Growing up, I noticed a lack of representation in the fields I was drawn to. This realization sparked a desire to become the change I wished to see, to inspire others within my community. I decided to go back to school with the new goal of being a physician-scientist. My love for hands-on work naturally steered me toward surgery. The DxD Pathways in Health Technology program was introduced to me through the MESA program at my college. I was looking for a way to gain practical exposure in the medtech space. After reading the description for the program, it sounded interesting. The reality far exceeded my initial expectations.
The prospect of collaborating with equally driven students was exciting. However, the opportunity to be mentored by professionals from Intuitive Surgical was truly invaluable. I have long admired their surgical robot and I even got the chance to use one. Learning about other companies and their contributions at the technology showcase was a highlight of the program.

Throughout the program I had the opportunity to network with physicians, engineers, and CEOs. I even got the chance to shadow Dr. Zachary Edmonds at El Camino Health and view a wide range of procedures. If you are a pre-med student you know how rarely these opportunities come about. From seeing bone biopsies to Pleurx catheter placements, this clinical immersion day reaffirmed my decision to pursue a career as a surgeon. On my drive home I couldn’t stop smiling. Dr. Edmonds was kind enough to invite me to come back for another shift, an offer I will definitely be taking him up on. Everyone in the hospital was extremely nice and supportive. Even taking the time to give advice or share about themselves.
Beyond the technical aspects, the shadowing experience offered a glimpse into the dynamics of the hospital environment. I witnessed the collaborative efforts of the entire healthcare team – nurses, anesthesiologists, technicians – all working in concert to ensure the best possible patient outcomes. The seamless coordination and communication between these professionals showed the importance of teamwork, a lesson that was also emphasized throughout the DxD program.
Another aspect about the Pathways program that I loved was the presentations about personal and professional development. I learned how to maximize my potential and even improve my resume. I learned how to be a good leader and how to be led, two very important concepts to understand as a future physician.
The most valuable aspect of the program to me was being in a supportive and collaborative environment where everyone wants to see you succeed.
The most valuable aspect of the program to me was being in a supportive and collaborative environment where everyone wants to see you succeed. Everyone I encountered was really kind and respectful. I felt like I had the freedom to share any idea or ask any question. In fact, it was encouraged. The team at DxD continues to support myself and other students, informing us about internship opportunities or even just being there to give advice. I will carry this experience with me for the rest of my academic and professional career.
